Meemure: Experience The Authentic Village Life in Sri Lanka

      Administrator, January 1, 2026January 1, 2026

Meemure is a small remote village in Sri Lanka, nestled deep within the Knuckles Mountain Range in the Central Province. Known as one of the most isolated villages in the country, it is renowned for its untouched natural beauty and traditional lifestyle. Surrounded by misty mountains, tea and cardamom plantations, and waterfalls, it’s an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

      Why Visit Meemure ?

      Landscape & Nature

The village is surrounded by waterfalls, shimmering streams, and lush paddy fields. It is dominated by the pyramid-shaped Lakegala Mountain to the east and the rugged Knuckles peaks to the west.

      Adventure Activities

Meemure is a premier destination for water adventures, including stream sliding and confidence jumping into natural rock pools. Other popular activities include trekking to Corbett’s Gap, bird watching, and night camping.

      Cultural Heritage

With a small population of around 400, the village has preserved ancient customs for over 500 years. It gained wider fame after being featured as a primary filming location for the popular local movie “Sooriya Arana”.

      Seclusion

There is very limited mobile and internet coverage in Meemure, making it an ideal “digital detox” location.

      Top Experiences

      Nature & Hiking

      • Corbett’s Gap: A major viewpoint on the way to the village that offers a dramatic “split” view between the lush forest and the dry lowlands. It is a prime spot for photography and bird watching.
      • Waterfall Hunting: Discover hidden gems like the Sooriya Arana Falls (named after the film) and the multi-tiered Seven Waterfalls, many of which require a short hike through the jungle to reach.
      • Night Camping: Spend a night under the stars at a riverside campsite. Most local tour operators provide tents, traditional BBQ dinners, and bonfires for an authentic wilderness experience.

      Adventure & Water Sports

      • Confidence Jumping & Stream Sliding: The most iconic activity in Meemure involves sliding down smooth rock formations into natural pools and jumping from heights into the crystal-clear waters of the Heen Ganga.
      • Lakegala Peak Trek: For serious hikers, trekking to the base or summit of the pyramid-shaped Lakegala Mountain provides a grueling but rewarding challenge with panoramic views of the Knuckles Range.
      • Natural Infinity Pools: Relax in the many secluded rock pools scattered along the river, which offer a peaceful alternative to the high-energy jumping spots.

      Culture & Village Life

      • Authentic Village Cuisine: Enjoy traditional Sri Lankan meals prepared over wood-fired stoves. Local favorites include Kos (jackfruit) curry, Lunu Miris, and freshwater fish caught from nearby streams.
      • Paddy Field Walks: Wander through the ancient terrace-style paddy fields that have been cultivated by the villagers for centuries using traditional irrigation methods.
      • The Ancient Bo Tree: Visit the center of the village to see the historic Bo tree, which serves as a communal gathering point for the residents of Meemure.

      Best Time to Visit

      • December to April for most pleasant weather.
      • June to September for lush greenery and flowing waterfalls.
      • September to November is the rainy season can make water activities dangerous due to high water levels and leeches.

      Travel Essentials

      • How to Get There: The journey starts from Hunnasgiriya (approx. 50km from Kandy). From there, it is a scenic 33km drive through winding mountain roads. While roads have been improved to allow private cars, the path remains narrow and challenging.
      • Where to Stay: Most accommodations are eco-lodges, campsites, or homestays run by locals which offers an authentic village experience.
      • Travel Tips: It is highly recommended to hire a local guide for safety and deeper cultural insights. Visitors should dress modestly to respect village traditions and bring a fully charged power bank due to remote conditions.
